Open Question: FOOD ALLERGY:Cat food allergy; cat food holistic quality: cat hair loss sojo cooking ; so jo food ;?
Hello! In February I switched my cat from Innova hard kibble to wet food (per request of the vet). Keeni had a problem with constipation so we switched her food and got her a fountain. She LOVES the water fountain......the canned food, not so much. After going through the shelves at the pet food store, (she's incredibly picky and wouldn't eat the Innova wet food), I finally found one that she seemed to like. She's now on Wellness, but doesn't seem all that committed to it. LOL My problem is that she eats very sporadically and I'm worried about her nutrition. Some day's she'll eat a whole can (5.5oz) and other days it's about half. I haven't noticed any pattern as to when she cleans her dish or not. She's acting normally, and still has lots of energy to play, but she's lost hair on the back of both legs and the bare spot on her belly is getting larger. Do you think it could be a food allergy or lack of nutrients? She'll be 14 yrs in October and hasn't had any health issues at all, so this is stumping me!
Also, I was thinking of trying the Nuvet supplements you've suggested to other pet owners. Do you think adding that would clear up the issue of hair loss/nutritional worries?
moreResolved Question: how to get into holistic nutrition counseling without going through a hokey sounding online school?
I have a bachelor's in nutrition, about 5 years in various human services jobs and an interest in holistic stuff. I want to use my interests and talents in some kind of fun job. I was thinking of doing holistic nutrition counseling but a lot of the schools I find for that seem pretty hokey and aren't accreditted universities or anything. Any suggestions?
moreOpen Question: What are deficiences of Allopathy?
Dr. Jindal Dean, Goa Medical college said on Sunday June 28, 2009 that, Now traditionally you always starts with merits of system I will do it reverse I will start with weaknesses of our system, that is modern system we call it or a system of Allopathy, first of all I must confess that the biggest weakness of Allopathy is as side effects of medicines, while most of our traditional indigenous system of medicine and Dr.Kothe is there he will agree with that the homeopathy system will not do any harm if not good, but Allopathy can do harm instead of doing the good, reason for that is unlike homeopathy, Ayurveda etc most of our medicines are synthetic medicines, they are not from the plant region or not the herbal medicines, so why they are very strong they can take care of many problems but at the same practically I must say each medicine have got inherent side effects so you are practically way between the benefits and the side effects, so that is one of the weaknesses of our system that is Allopathy.
Second problem with our system of Allopathy is unlike Homeopathy unlike Ayurveda we never had a holistic approach to the disease what we had to do is if patient comes to us with throat infection we use to treat his throat infection, if come to pain in a knee we use to treat his knee pain, we use to take a patient as a whole, of course of late the things have started changing, we have learnt from Homeapathy we have learnt from Ayurveda that the holistic approach have brought lots of benefits and slowly we are moving towards the holistic approach in Allopathy also.
Third think the weakness of Allopathy is that we have a so much obsessed in treating the people from the disease that we over looked the positive aspect of health , of course of late again now we are putting lot of stress on nutrition on mental health and other thing which is still recently we never gave importance.
Last thing which I fill is very big set back of our system of medicine is that it is very expensive. It is very very expensive as compare to all other systems medicine, so in our country I think that is a big weakness of our system.
But having said thet having numerated weaknesses of system of medicine, we do have many merits, we do have many strong points and that is evidence of mushrooming medical colleges, mushrooming hospitals and clinics. So what are the strong points let me take few minutes to enumerate what are the strong points of our system of medicine.

I've found TONS of good information on how to take better care of cancer patient holistic way. Proper nutrition is A MUST... and found some AMAZING products such as Oregano Oil P73 to "melt away tumor", Colloidal Silver for strong immune system, Graviola ti kill cancer cells, Sutherlander OPC to fight cacer cells, Transfer Factor by 4Life, etc ??? Or are any of you guys doing ALL or SOME of this ?? What I also do not understand is if a mankind can send a rocket to the Mars, why we can not cure Cancer? (I know University of Texas at Cancer Research Center is making a cancer cure machine right now waiting on FDA approval. That is a HUGE hope for our mankind. )

I own to small poodles. I am interested in going all natural, herbal, holistic (whatever the proper terms are). My goal is to feed my dogs treats and foods that will be the best nutrition and serve as a method of preventitive health care. I want to prevent infections, cancers, allergies, etc, etc through the foods and treats I use. I have done some research and I am hearing about cranberries, blueberries, and coconut oils as treats. But I would benefit from the advice of people who are actually doing this. Please share with me your stories and experiences. What really works?
moreVoting Question: What is the best diet for me be based on my fitness profile?
ok, i've been overweight all of my life, and have struggled to lose weight since i was in grade school... last year I lost 20 lbs using Crack the fat-loss code, it was a very good diet IMO but it was just too high maintenance for me.. I can handle pretty intense aerobic activity and having tried to lose weight all my life, I'm not really so clueless about nutrition.. so the the main point is, what fitness plan is best for someone like me, who is not super fat, and has been exercising (i'm not in a grossly unhealthy lifestyle I won't lose weight by making major changes) ? i've wanted to try the THE BEST LIFE bob greene but from reviews it seems that it's for those who need to make major changes.. i need a fitness plan because i can't to control my eating habits if i just try to eat less..
i would also prefer if its a "holistic plan", meaning it deals with the emotional aspects of weight loss, since I that's also a big part of my struggle...
btw, i'm 20, 5'2 140 lbs, wants to lose 35 lbs, i also don't eat meat (but i eat fish) so it has to be pretty flexible
here are some of the diet plans i want to try which would be the best for me?
bob harper's are you ready
YOU on a diet

aside from these i'm open to your suggestions..

moreResolved Question: salt substitutes for cancer patients?
My grandma was diagnosed with lung cancer, and will be going through chemotherapy along with a great nutrition plan from "Beating Cancer with Nutrition". However, her holistic doctor recommended to try an alkaline diet (basic foods, non-acidic). So she needs to have low salt, but a lot of recipes call for salt. Anyways, my question is, is there a substitute for salt that will be good for a cancer patient?
moreResolved Question: What brand of organic food should I feed my new dog? What guaranteed analysis should I look for?
I just rescued a Parson Russell Terrier (long-legged Jack Russell) from the Humane Society where I volunteer. She is very thin, and I want her to gain weight quickly (in a healthy way), but I don't know what brand of dog food to feed her. I already know that commercial dog food brands (i.e. Purina) are full of indigestible components such as artificial colors/preservatives and animal by-products, so I'm positive that I want to feed her an all-natural/organic dog food (preferrably one that has meat or meat meal making up the first four ingredients). Right now, I like Natura EVO Small Bites, but I'm concerned with the guaranteed analysis because I don't understand the nutrition needs of a terrier. I'm not sure if too much protein is a good thing for her, especially because she's so malnourished. Will that help or hurt her? Feel free to suggest other holistic/organic dog food brands to compare. :) Currently, my mom is feeding her Chicken Soup for the Dog Lover's Soul.
Natura EVO Small Bites
Crude Protein (min)= 42%
Crude Fat (min)= 22%
First four ingredients: Turkey, Chicken, Chicken Meal, Turkey Meal
Chicken Soup for the Dog Lover's Soul
Crude Protein (min)= 24%
Crude Fat (min)= 14%
First four ingredients: Chicken, Turkey, Chicken Meal, Ocean Fish Meal
moreResolved Question: Switching Dog Food Brands.... Whats best?
I am looking for a slightly cheaper brand of dog food than what I have been feeding my pet. I have a nine month old German Shep/Great Dane mix. I have her eating half raw half dog food. As a not, she has been checked by a vet and she is extremely healthy! They have told us we are doing a great job with feeding her, and yes she eats a tiny bit of avacado, and a few other vegetables. The vet has told us this is great and that avacado is okay for her just not in massive amounts. She doesnt get it all the time, maybe a tablespoon when she does get it and it is mixed with her liver and brocoli and carrots normaly.
Anyways I currently have her on Blue Buffalo Large Breed Dog Food, this is sold at petsmart. It is a holistic dog food that is lower on grains as that is not what dogs need. I am looking for a switch to somethign maybe sold at walmart. I want to keep it healthy, no sugars, lower on the grains and all that stuff, what is the best brand?
Does anyone know abotu these brands?

moreResolved Question: Help with cat who has IBS?
At least i think she has IBS, she goes from severe diarrhea (almost water) to constipation and not pooing for 3 days. Im not feeding her anything in particular constantly because im still searching for something that will work. I only feed holistic food, and have tried wellness core, go natural, oven baked, as well as some other store brand holistics. Only premium though. I have no problem forking out money for my cat's nutrition. Now for some backround, I have had her for 3 months, shes a rescue, just under 2 years old, and a purebred extreme faced persian. Other than the diarrhea/constipation spells she is perfect, shiny, low shedding coat, bright eyes, very active, pees regularily. Some other symptoms i have noticed is her stool is very smelly, her breath stinks and shes often hungry meowing for food. She was seen by a vet through the adoption process, spayed, and had a general check and all shots.
The reason i ask about this is i am wondering if there are any supplements i can include in her diet or a specific food that will help, or any ingredients in food that i should be looking for. Now for the biggest problem: canned food is out of the question, oddly enough she will NOT eat it, no matter what kind, not even real chicken or tuna. She will not touch any wet food or even moist treats. Dry kibble is the only thing she will eat.
Please only reply if you have knowledge on this subject or have first hand experience.
Do not tell me im a bad pet owner for not immediatly seeking a vet, my cat is fine and in good health other than this. Plus i cannot get into the vet for at least another week.

moreResolved Question: Options: Chiropractic or Nursing?
My dilemma: I'm 24, want to start a career sooner rather than later, hope to have a family by age 30 and hope to eventually practice more holistic medicine incorporating nutrition and acupuncture into my own practice.
I've been accepted into a chiropractic College (4 years to complete)
Been accepted to a "certificate nursing program" (1-2 years)
Hoping to hear from a Bachelor of Science in nursing program (3 years to complete)
I already have my BS in biology and if I pursue nursing I ultimately want to be an APRN (requiring a BSN).
My thoughts: I
already have a BS so if I pursued the certificate nursing path I would have a job the fastest, it would cost me less money and perhaps a future employer may pay for me to finish my BSN and masters degree in nursing (but becasue it's just a "certificate" I feel I wouldn't have the job opportunities as a BSN would)
If I choose the BSN path it would take me 3 years, be a little more expensive, but I could start working while in school (and be in a secure position if I decided to get pregnant)
Chiropractic school: would be the most expensive, (adding to the debt I already have from my undergraduate degree) would take me the longest, but I would be making the most money sooner and ultimately practicing more of what I want to do in the holistic field. I currently work as a chiropractic assistant and love the field, but I am worried that if I decided to become pregnant, it would inhibit my ability to adjust people and therefore practice.
thoughts or suggestions???
moreResolved Question: Whole food diet or low fat?
Lately I've been reading a lot about eating whole foods. I've read "Real Food", "Nutrition and physical degeneration", and love to read the articles on the Weston A. Price website. I'm thinking about going into Holistic Nutrition but would like to know more about which is better: whole foods or a low fat diet? So far I'm leaning towards whole food as it makes more sense to me but the government and most modern diet books extol the benefits of low fat diets (e.g. those low in animal products and high in vegetables.) It's so hard to decide what to believe with such conflicting views. What do you eat and why? Has it helped to improve your health?
moreResolved Question: Dog food question. HELP!?
Currently I have my 4 month old Basset hound puppy on "Eagle Pack Holistic Chicken meal and rice" food. It says it is for small and medium breed pups (from my research they say bassets are considered a medium breed) and adults. So it is an all stages food.
My vet told me there is controversy on this because of course puppies are growing and need different nutrition then adult dogs. Which makes sense to me. I am so tired of changing dog foods. Which I have had to do 3 times due to diarrhea issues and my vet telling me too. But at this point they think he actually has a bacterial infection and he is on antibiotics right now to clear it up.
If you don't think an all stages dog food is appropriate any suggestions on a puppy food? I will not use Iams or Science diet. You do not get what you are paying for with their ingredients. I want I quality dog food that does not cost $2.00 a pound.
Any suggestions would be appreciated! When I got him he was on Chicken Soup for puppies but he had weird orangish yellow stool. Which I found can be common for some dogs on it. I think at this point I am just going to go with Innova puppy. I know it is a great food. It costs more then the Eagle Pack. But I was feeding him California Natural before which is made by Innova so it is about the same price anyway.
I have never had a puppy and I may be being paranoid. But I want to make SURE he is getting the proper nutrition he needs.
Thank you!

i used to feed dog foods like iams, pedigree, purina a long long long time ago.... and then i took a small course in pet nutrition.... if you just read the back of the bag and understand what the ingredients really are, you would stop feeding that stuff to your dogs... *meat by-product* basically means the bowels of an animal, there hoofs and feet that have been on farmed animals that have been standing in there own feces for years, guts, hair, skin, feathers, all of the stuff that we can't eat, cooked and processed to feed our pets. its disgusting.
also foods like iams, pedigree, purina one, eukanuba, are all loaded with corn, wheat and preservatives that are un-needed. there are alot of all nautrual and holistic brands out there that use usda grade a meats to feed your pet, and that arent loaded with fillers like corn or wheat. some of the brands are, nutro ultra, wellness, buffalo blue, canidae, pinnacle, Advanced pet diet, Natural balance, solid gold, innova, Natures variety and im sure there are plenty more out there.

I know that Vet's get very little training on pet nutrition, I feel upset that they recommend Iams, Science Diet, Hill's Science and Medi-cal. They are just recommending the companies that gave them grants in school. These all contain by-products, wheat gluten and corn and not to mention they were all involved in the pet recall of 2007.
Is there a way to find a Vet that knows about pet nutrition beyond what they learned in school? I checked the yellow pages but none of them say anything about healthy nutrition, there was only one holistic Vet.So I called my current Vet recently and asked them what they recommend, which is the above. I asked the person on the phone what they knew about Wellness cat food, she had no idea what I was talking about. I guess I should talk to the Vet herself.
She is probably a competent Vet in all other aspects so as long as I know what I'm feeding her that is what is important.

he CAN'T tolerate any moisture in his food, so what can i do to help him?
i can't even give him moist treats without getting an undesirable reaction.
second question, my little 12 lb terrier x all of a sudden has very dry skin. we applied a dose of Frontline a week ago and i'm wondering if it could be that? or because Canidae changed their formula?
would a little bit of veg. oil help? or fish oil?
it's not that he WON'T eat it, his system can't tolerate it.
moreResolved Question: High/low quality cat foods?
I've noticed that so many more people in the cat section feed low quality cat foods whereas in the dog section many more people are aware of what they are feeding their dogs. In the dog section, if someone asks a pet food question, there's like ten people in there explaining about higher quality dog foods. In the cat section, it feels like I'm alone with another two or three people while all the other answerers are recommending low quality foods like Meow Mix, Purina, Iams etc. and recommending feeding dry instead of wet.
My cat food writeup:
Not all pet food is made equally. A lot of it is full of corn, by-products, dyes, unhealthy preservatives, filler grains and all sorts of nasty stuff. A lot of pet food companies are perfectly happy to the dump cheap leftovers and things that aren't safe for human consumption (from human food processing plants) into their foods. Will it kill your cat? No, it has to be nutritionally complete and safe to even be marketed. Is it healthy? Not by a long shot.
Corn is a low quality ingredient you never want to see in your pet food. Corn and low quality grains are two of the biggest culprits when it comes to food allergies in our pets.
Thankfully, there are some excellent cat foods being made these days that include organic, human grade ingredients rather than trash not fit for human consumption.
Examples of low quality foods to avoid: Anything you can find in a grocery store will be low end, Purina, Iams, Eukanuba, Science Diet, Royal Canin, Whiskas, Fancy Feast, Friskies, Meow Mix.
Examples of high quality foods to look for: Innova, Wellness, Solid Gold, Felidae, Fromm Four Star, Merrick, GO Natural, Nature's Variety Prairie, Nature's Logic, Artemis Fresh Mix, Timber Wolf Organics.
Although the high quality foods are more expensive, you're getting what you're paying for. Less filler material means more concentrated nutrients... this means you typically need to feed far less of the high quality food than you would of the low quality one. Which also means less poop!
Before following your vet's food recommendation, keep in mind that vets get /very/ little nutritional training during their schooling. Besides that, what training they /do/ get is usually sponsored or taught by the crappy pet food companies! They also often get paid to sell some of their products at their clinics (Science Diet, Royal Canin etc.)
A great option is to go with an entirely grainless diet. Diets high in grain have been attributed to problems with diabetes in cats. Cats are obligate carnivores, so why should there be grain in their diet? Many of the high quality foods now put out grainless formulas. Some good grainless diets include: Innova EVO, Wellness CORE, Blue Wilderness, Nature's Variety Instinct, Orijen, Horizon Legacy, Merrick Before Grain, Fromm Surf & Turf, Now!, and Sold Gold Indigo Moon, Taste of the Wild.
Some pretty decent foods can even be found in common pet stores. Petsmart carries Blue Buffalo products (such as the excellent grain free diet Blue Wilderness). Petco carries Wellness, Solid Gold, Natural Balance, Eagle Pack Holistic, Blue Buffalo, Castor & Pollux Organix, Pinnacle, and Halo. If you can't find a food, most of the high quality food brands have websites with store locators on them.
Another option, if you can't find anywhere around you that sells good foods, is to order your pet food online. Here's an excellent place to do so: http://www.petfooddirect.com/store/
Remember that foods should be switched gradually (mixing new slowly in with the old over about a two week period), especially when switching to a higher quality one, so as not to upset tummies.
Another option for feeding cats is to feed raw. This is something that should be thoroughly researched before being attempted:
http://www.barfworld.com/
http://www.rawfedcats.org/
http://www.rawfed.com/
http://www.wysong.net/controversies/rawmeat.shtml
Now the question is, do you feed wet or dry? Wet is the correct answer. The reason is, in the wild, cats normally get most of their water content directly from their prey items and drink very little. Domestic cats are no different, and because of the fact that they are designed to take in water with their meal, they have a very low thirst drive. Cats often just don't drink enough. This leads to urinary tract infections and crystals. The bit about dry food being better for teeth is a myth and has not been proven in the least (cats barely even chew their dry food and, really, does a pretzel clean /your/ teeth? Cats should have their teeth brushed with cat toothbrushes and cat toothpaste at least a few times a week as well as see the vet for dental cleanings when necessary /regardless/ of what they are being fed). Canned/wet food is better because it more closely mimics the cat's natural diet. More on why canned food is best:
http://www.catinfo.org/ (Excellent cat nutrition information by a vet)
http://cats.about.com/cs/catfood/a/cannBlah. Question cut off.
http://cats.about.com/cs/catfood/a/canned_food.htm
http://www.littlebigcat.com/index.php?action=library&act=show&item=whycatsneedcannedfood
http://www.felinefuture.com/nutrition/bpo_ch4.php
Another option to get cats to drink more would be a cat fountain. Cats tend to like to drink from running water and cat fountains see to that need, encouraging cats to take in more water.
More:
http://www.dogfoodanalysis.com/dog_food_reviews/ (Dog food reviews. It's for dogs, but most of the high quality brands also put out excellent cat foods. Four stars is a decent food, five stars is a great food, and six stars is an excellent food.)
I guess my question is, why do cat owners seem so far behind in terms of cat nutrition?
Another question, does my write up change your view on what you're feeding your cat at all?Really? So you think I should type all that up every single time I want to answer a question? I may be copy pasting but I'm copy pasting /my own words/, it's not like I'm copy pasting something from another website. It's /insanely/ frustrating JC, you're right. It drives me bonkers!Thank you, Ken, it makes me feel better to think we are starting to make a difference :)
Brian, I do include some links for raw feeding but I don't know much about it myself so I kind of just left it up to the individual owner to follow the links and educate themselves. I only know that it's an excellent diet option when done correctly :)

I need serious help.... i know a lot of dog foods are bad for dogs and that you have to pay a lot of money to get the good holistic food. Our dogs are very well taken care of but we can't afford to be spending $15 on less than a 10lb bag of food. This doesn't mean we can't afford our dogs.

I found a really interesting correspondence college and all their programs are holistically based. There's also a course as a Holistic Health Practitioner that sounds really interesting too. I'm wondering if a career in this field is legitimate and possible. I am passionate about living this way, so having a career in this field would be a reflection on how I live. I have found some on line schools that offer degrees in Holistic Health, but I wonder if that will get me anywhere or would I need a degree or additional schooling elsewhere? I would like to work in a doctors office of some type, I'm considering Holistic Nutrition or Practitioner. Do these jobs even exist? Advice from someone who is successful in this field would be helpful.
moreResolved Question: Anyone can help me the conclusion of this essay?
My philosophy for teaching young children is that it is vital that their physical and mental needs are addressed. Each child must receive personalized and individual attention, and parents must be allowed to participate in their child's schooling. Children require love and nurturing in all aspects of their lives.
Children learn best when their physical and mental needs are met. Children must feel safe and secure in their learning environment, and they must be provided with their basic physical needs to help them obtain focus and to improve their critical thinking and learning potential. The environment that I teach in will be accepting, respectful, nurturing, responsive, and supportive for each child, considering their different and individual personal needs.
No child will be allowed to blend into the shadows and disappear, and each child will receive specific instruction and help. I passionately believe that all children are all their own developmental level, and that many children require different teaching styles in order to learn.
Every child will receive healthy, nutritional meals, and I am prepared to provide specific meals and snacks to match different nutritional requirements that can result from diabetes, parental belief, or other conditions or preferences. Parents and other caregivers will be provided with information about the important of nutritional meals and snacks to aid them in providing improved nutrition at home.
Active play will be included throughout the day. Not only can this sort of activity improve the child's ability to retain information and concepts, it can improve their lifelong activity habits. I will integrate active play into all areas of teaching.
Every child requires mental security in their learning environment, and children learn best from people that they consider friendly, loving, and respectable. I will treat each child as my own, providing love and attention throughout the day. To truly love every child in your care, it's vital to know and love yourself, and to be prepared to reach out and understand the difficulties that children face in today's world.
Parents are a vital part of early childhood education. I will offer regular opportunities for parents to involve themselves more thoroughly in their child's studies and school activities. The parents are the child's first and most important teachers, and the more involvement is allowed, the more the child gains through their schooling.
Children in my class will receive holistic, personal attention that will aid them in developing into happy, successful adults. Any needs or desires that the parents have will be addressed in a respectful manner.

Most vets in my area still recomend very poor quality food the one I am seeing even put my dog on a food that contains ethoxyquin (sp) as a sensitive stomach diet plus the first ingredient was corn and third was pork fat.
I have an appointment on saturday to discuss a more holistic approach to vet care for my 6 month old GSD and I am sure she will bring up food. I feed raw and I know that vets around here turn their nose up at you and act like you are an idiot, at least my last one did. I am not an idiot I read books about pet food and about natural health and came up with being the best option for my dogs. I learned that dogs don't need grains at all and they don't digest them well, hence the huge piles of poo in the back yard. I also learned what is really in a lot of the food recomended by vets and other popular brands. Should I just avoid the topic all toghether or try to calmly let her know that I believe it is the right thing. Thanks I am going to have to work on my tone of voice before hand I can tell but good ideas about bringing quotes and books also about asking questions about reading material she would suggest. I don't want her to think or feel like I am trying to make her look stupid just like I don't want her to do that to mewell tulip I have a question for you why is higly processed food recomended for pets but human doctors tell you to avoid them! My conclusion is they are not good for people or dogs! So weather it is a home-cooked or raw diet it is much better than highly processed food with half the essentials baked and processed out of them.
