if i put the springs on the rods with the overhead door up, will it wind the springs properly just by shutting door with opener after tightening all nuts and pulley wires? Can springs be installed in a way so you don't have to manually wind them? more

Voting Question: What could have bit me a mosquito, spider, or could it have been a bat?

I fell asleep last night on the cot in the garage (was up late working on a project), when I woke up this morning I found a bite mark on my left arm, just above my elbow on the inside. It was about .5-1cm in diameter, was raised in a bump to a distinct center point and was kinda pinkish/redish, and it looked like there might have been two small puncture marks about a millimeter apart from each other at the very center, but there might have only been one central one. It kind of itched a little this morning, but I didn't scratch it and didn't notice it after a while, and now about 17 hrs after I first noticed it, the color is lighter, but I can still feel a small bump. The bite kinda reminds me of a mosqito or spider bite, and thats what my dad says it is, but I might have left the service/people (not the overhead/car) door open with a fan blowing out, which would have left an entrance for any bats (or bugs for that matter) to get in. I havent found any bats, but even though its a small garage (24' x 24') it is rather cluttered, and would be difficult to find one if it fell behind something. Being a garage without airconditioning I would think it might be a prime place for a bat to try and roost. Although we have never seen any in the garage, I've seen plenty flying around at dusk/twilight outside. We do usualy have lights on during the day and are working in there daily also, so I wouldn't think they would try and make roost in there, with all the light and noise, and us moving about. I don't know much about bats and they're habitats, but, being that I'm a hypochondriac (not sure if I spelled that correctly), knowing that a 10 year old girl died here about 3 years ago from rabies from a bat, also knowing that bats are the number one wildlife to have rabies in Indianapolis (also number one transmiter from animal to human), I'm kinda worried. What kind of bite does this sound like to you a regular skeeter or spider, or could it possibly be a bat? I don't want to bother the health department, seeing how I don't even have a bat for them to test, nor do I even know if there was ever a bat even in there in the first place, should I be worried? Constructive thoughts and comments are welcome, but I'm not looking for "if your concerned it was a bat then get the shots" I want to know what kind of bite it is, before I concern myself with the shots, because I don't know what a bat bite even looks like, and other than knowing about bats and rabies, have no worries about it. For those of you just wishing to harass and, tease take your comments elsewhere, where they might be more appreciated. more

Voting Question: I locked myself out of the garage. How do I open it?

The otherday, Me and my Sister were out in the garage. No windows, no regular doors. just walls, floor, cieling and the overhead door. Well, I took the garage door opener with me. I went upstairs, and then she came up, not knowing that the opener was inside. She closed the door from the switch on the inside. Our owners has another opener, but he tried it, and it won't work. It has a keypad thing, but we don't know what the code is, or how to work it. We were told it was disconnected. We can't pull it open because it is locked. Not in a way to were you can pick the lock and it opens, but it is hatched somehow. Locked and won't let it go up without the opener. We CANNOT run into the garage with our car. We don't want to have to pay for somebody to come out and open it. We need to get in there though before June 18th, 6pm Mountain Time. Because we have sound equiptment, Guitars, Bass Guitars, ect.. It's all in there. and we need it! more

Voting Question: Overhead(Legacy)---Genie garage door?

The torsion springs were replaced today by the repair men and when we pushed either button(remote or wall mount), the garage slightly opened. However, after he replaced the springs, the repair man was not able to get the motor to lift the door. He said that we had to replace the motor. I'm wondering if anything happened to the settings of the motor or something after he replaced the springs. Is there a way to reset the motor. If we press the wall mount or the little remote we hear nothing but a red light lights up on the back of the motor. We do not have a keypad outside of the garage, only the wall mount and the two remotes. Any ideas on what happened or how to reset it??!?!?!?!?the door can be raised by hand. But the motor is not working. When we press either the remote or the wall mount, a red light blinks on the back of the motor mount. But clicks, no movement, no nothing!! help!!!! more

Can anyone tell me will that green light ever go off so I can reset it so it works normal again? That green light is obviously picking up a signal so I cant reset it until it goes off. Resolved Question: how to join braided cable to form a loop?

my overhead garage door cable snapped. i bought a thicker (3/32")braided metal cable replacement part. What's a good way to joinn the end of the cable back on itself in forming a loop at the bottom of the door frame? I tried a ferrule but couldn't crunch it to join the cable together. need to hoist a 270 pound garage door. hope i've explained things clearly. can't risk getting hit by a failed cable. thx. more

Voting Question: Unfraying braided wire cable & crunching ferrule?

It's 3/32" thick braided wire cable. The end has frayed and I can't guide it through a narrow metal ferrule (the ferrule is used to join the cable together at the end to create a loop). Also I tried crunching the ferrule onto the cable with channel locks (before the cable frayed) and I couldn't do it. My project is replacing the snapped cable on the overhead garage door and I'm stuck for now. The torsion spring is in good shape. Ideas? Thanks. more

Resolved Question: Trouble Programming Homelink in 2009 C300 with an Overhead Door opener?

I just bought a 2009 C300 and have tried for hours to program the HomeLink transmitter to work with my Overhead Door Legacy garage door opener and it will not work. It works fine in my 2006 Infiniti M35, just not in the new car. Voting Question: My Lab mixed dog of 10 years has shreaded my cedar trim around the overhead doors of my garage.?

Sometime last night she chewed or scratched to the point that it looks like a mature 200 lb buck deer tried to mark his spots on my cedar door trim. We have a 3 car garage and she destroyed the lower 20 inches of both sides of one door. We are not talking just shavings. We are talking chunks of wood 1/2" wide, 3"-10" long and 1/16" thick. She started on the other 2 doors but must have been tired or was interrupted. Could something medically be wrong? She chewed as a pup and dug a lot of holes but out grew that years ago. more

Voting Question: why do i feel like this?

I feel like everything I do for my mom is stupid and worthless. I feel like a slave sometimes at home. I feel like when i'm away from home, i'm happier than I ever am. I feel like my mom is a bit too strict on me. I feel like my brothers are mean to me... for no reason. I feel like this because.. here's an example. today: I was sitting outside, and my brother was yelling at me to go inside. It was nice weather, and I just ignored him. I was sitting on the ledge of my porch, and then I feel a big snowball hit my back. 'You ugly roach' my brother said. I just ignored him and kinda shrugged it off with a laugh. My brothers went inside, and then I went into my garage to just go in there because I thought i could find something in there. My brothers closed the garage on me, laughing. My mom didn't even care, too. I went up to the porch to open the side door to go inside, and my brother who threw the snowball at me locked it and smiled. I just turned away and went through another door. Later on, I told my dad to have a talk with him, since my mom didn't even bother to do anything. My mom overhead me telling my dad this, and she was all. 'Your so mean why would you do that' 'im telling your dad your grades' I'm MEAN? My mom always tells my brothers not to touch me or hit me, but they do it anyways and all she does is give them a little warning. All I get is yelling and a bunch of tears after. Why do I feel so empty like this? Everytime things like these happen, I just feel useless. I feel like I don't belong in my family.oh and, i just noticed this was put into the wrong category. -.- my bad. more

Resolved Question: Overhead garage door freezes to concrete?

I have a insulated garage with ceiling fan that I heat to 10' C with a construction heater. The overhead doors are R-16 and attract condensation which drip down to concrete pad. It freezes causing a build upon the ends with large air space gaps in the center. This is very hard on the opener as struggles to break free when opening and increases my heating costs. I was thinking about using Pipe or Roof Heat Trace on the doors rubber seal but, the manufacturer says it would be hazardous to use it for that purpose. I am now thinking about cutting a trench in the concrete where the door sits and installing a pipe to which I can insert a heating element or liquid to keep that area free of ice. My question is what type of element or heat source should I use. If you have other suggestions to resolve my problem they will be greatly appreciated. more

Resolved Question: Why does the XM radio signal go out sometimes in the exact same (and sometimes random) spots while in the car?

I could understand the signal going out while inside a tunnel or parking garage or something, but I would just be driving along on the open road and the XM radio goes out for half a minute or more! Sometimes there's trees on the side of the road but not overhead that much. Even when I do drive under some tree branches, they're not that thick or anything. I can even pick up a full signal (usually) inside my car in the garage with the door closed - so why would a few skinny tree branches matter? It's very aggravating, especially when it keeps doing it over-and-over. It's nice not having any static with XM, but with a regular radio it would just get a little static-ey is all and not completely go out like with an XM radio. So I was just wondering, is there anything I can do to fix it? It happens every day - is there like a booster or something I can buy? Would repositioning my antenna help? (Even though I put it on the outside of the car on the roof where I think it's supposed to go anyway) Thanks! more

Resolved Question: Replacement remote for "Overhead Door" brand Phantom model garage door opener?

Resolved Question: 2 questions about skunks?

Please don't answer this unless you actually know. Post your experience/credentials. 1. What could make a skunk spray, besides dogs or people? We've been here for 10 years and never had a problem. Suddenly, there was spray twice last week, so bad we were gagging insides the house with all the windows shut. We don't have a dog and my neighbors' dogs all stay on their leashes. I've never seen any critters in my yard except the skunks, woodchucks and turkeys, and of course the small birds. I've never seen a raccoon or a deer here. We're several blocks from any woods. I'm sure we have small rodents because I keep a little patch of habitat and some of the neighborhood cats hunt in it sometimes, but in my experience, cats and skunks get along well. Would a skunk have sprayed a cat or another skunk? 2. I saw a huge one in my garage tonight. It's a wooden garage with a concrete floor and the overhead door is broken right now, so it's open. Is there a way to tell if it's hunting or nesting, without getting into trouble? If it's nesting, can I use the garage to park my car? I know I can drive the skunk out with ammonia-soaked rags or something, but I don't want to unless I can't park the car in there. In Maine, leaving the car outside in winter is a lot of work. Sometimes it can kill the battery, and shoveling it out of drifts takes forever. The only thing in the garage besides tools is some leaves that have blown in, we don't keep garbage in there. more

Resolved Question: mechanics v/s bodymen?

i was wondering why does it seem that bodymen do not get the respect (financially) they deserve for the work they do. it is just so strange because people will take there auto or motorcycle in for repair and have no problem paying the crazy labor rates being charged for repairs. but when it comes to having body work done everyone backs up and doesnt think bodymen should be able to charge similar charges. i think mechanics and bodymen both have special talents. for years i worked as a mechanic. but later began painting cars because i really enjoy it much better. but as the economy slowed last year and there again people not wanting to pay a fair price for work i (as a motorcycle enthhusiast) moved to orlando fl to attend MMI and learn to work on harley davidson motorcycles. i figured while things are slow back home in ga i could get some more education. but while here i decided to do some paint work to earn some extra money. well the new problem is there again people not wanting to pay fair prices. latest example, i took on a job doing a resto paint job on a 92 Trans Am convertable. the car was in pretty good condition other than i am actually redoing the car from where the owner thought i could do the work with having no experience. he pretty much butchered the car. he had already completly disassembled the body. all plastic and rubber body parts have been removed along with the doors fenders and truck lid. . i have worked 4 days on the car so far. i have completely sanded down all body parts, completed all bodywork, put all parts in high build 2k primer, wet sanded and blocked entire car with 220 grit sandpaper by hand using guide coat method, and reprimered all parts which will get a final wet sanding with 400 grit prior to paint. all together i have put in 22 hours of labor at an hourly rate of only $15 per hour. i am doing the car at his garage so i have no overhead cost is why i am doing it at such a low rate. anyways to he complains that i am taking to long to perform the work. i nearly told him to shove it and finish it himself. but i could use the money. i reminded him that i only do it the right way and that is the only way i do it. i gave him the option to let me finish or leave it for him to finish. he opted for me to finish it. what do you all think about the whole situation.... yea $15.00 an hour is cheap. but you know it is extra money and that does not include any material. when i first came to florida i took a job at a local paint shop. i work there for 3 days till i quit. they were actually a $199. and up to $599 for base clear paint shop. my experience FAR exceeds what they do. i just could not and would not train myself to do such low quality work. but you are right about comparing the paint jobs. dang for $299 i would not even color sand and buff one. it cost at least $100 in sandpaper, buffing compound, and pads. people need to wake up.. more

Resolved Question: How do I fix my garage door?

I live in an apt building and the garage is one big one with a garage door for each stall. I can open the garage door just fine using the remote, but when I want to close the garage door I can't use the remote - when I try to the light on the motor thingie overhead flashes. So I have to shut the door 'holding down' (if you let go while it is closing it starts flashing again and stops) the door bell that is inside the garage next to the door. Then I have to open the neighbors garage door to exit. !! This is becoming exasperating and I have tried to have the owner fix it but they haven't gotten around to it yet. Is this something I could do. A simple reset maybe??? Any info will be most appreciated - Thanks. more

Resolved Question: How many amps is the circuit in my garage ceiling?

Ok, so I just moved into a temp condo (4-6 year old building). I am on the 3rd story and have a one car garage on ground level. There is no breaker in the box up here on the third floor for the garage so I cannot just look at the breaker. Is there anyway to tell if the circuit in my garage ceiling (garage door opener and overhead light) is 15 or 20 amps? I ask because I want to do a bit of MIG welding but need the 20 amps to get a proper weld...I know this isn't a forum, but I have to add this for captain 'sparky' down there: I'm plugging a tool into a receptacle in the garage I paid for... my garage. I'm not "tapping" (unless you call plugging your blender in in your kitchen "tapping"). Also, my electrical knowledge goes WAY beyond yahoo. Thanks for asking. I've done plenty of wiring and electrical work in ac and dc environments but don't know code for garage door openers/garage circuits and was hoping someone would chime in an say "hey, yeah, code for a garage circuit is 20 amps." And who said it was a lighting circuit? I just said a light was plugged into it. Anyway, if there are any other "12 year Journeyman Electricians" on here who want to act like a 6 year old with low self-esteem don't bother! And thanks to everyone else! :D more

The remote doesn't work at all to get the door to go down. I tried disconnecting the sensors, and that didn't help at all. Any suggestions? more

Before and After: The Kitchen

Oh yes...our "before" kitchen was quite something! Opportunity Knocks (With Grimy Little Knuckles)

Remember last week when I was grumping about my invitation from God to clean the basement? Well, it worked out astonishingly well. Re: Convergence.

I can't say they're doing it wrong, because I'm not sure why they're doing what they're doing, but I can say I think they're doing it poorly, because there are better ways to achieve the result they're getting in ways that don't alienate people. However, if I gave much of a shit, I'd put my sweat eq ... more
