Uv Water Treatment Questions and Answers

Resolved Question: My fish are dying one by one? Please help?

Re-posted due to deleted I have a 400 gallon pond. I had 16 fish in there. Now 5 Koi (2 - 3 inches) have died. They got fungus, Whitish cotton like things on them, and also fin rot. I bought a 5 day treatment and its still the same, this is day 6 and another one has fungus on him. I bought salt and I have added salt. I have 10 fish left, goldfish and 2 koi. What else can I do? Should I wait for all my fish to die and start over? or can they be saved? The pond has a pump, filter with UV and waterfall. I have two oxygeon plants and I have tested the water, all came back fine.Farhan what will that do?I have asked my local pet storeS and they mention treatment and salt which I have doneI cannot do a water change until tomorrow because of the water treatment. I kno many people wont know but this is my last bit of hope more

Resolved Question: Random questions about Bearded Dragon?

I have a bearded dragon that is approximately a year and a half old. I broke my bank setting up his habitat, but now that I've got all of his supplies it seems to be very nice and easy owning him. However, I've always had a problem with feeding him his greens since I've owned him. Terrible twos, like my little sister, wont seem to eat their vegetables. I've started using a method that has worked decently, but I just want to run it by some dragon pros and make sure I'm doing the right thing. In his tank, I have the warm side on the left, with a basking area. Then next to that, in the middle of the tank I have a large water area that is approximately an inch to two inches deep, and two small feeding bowls. Then I have a hiding area on the far right, with some bushy fake plants for him to crawl through and a half log for him to hide inside. It's a 55 gal tank. In the two bowls I leave two different foods. I leave some Flukers Buffet Blend for Adult Bearded Dragon food in one bowl. He'll pick at that here and there, but typically I leave the food there for two or three days before having to refill. I got into a habit of using this to make sure he was getting his calcium. I'd mix some of the calcium powder in with this bowl. In the other bowl, I keep his vegis. Every morning I change some lettuce and carrots out of the bowl for fresh stuff. He doesnt ever eat much of it through. If I hadnt witnessed him from time to time picking at some of the vegis, I'd think he never ate any, because theres typically not a noticeable amount missing the following morning. Basically my question is asking if this is a safe practice, by just leaving his food in there all day. I've been reading online and I've seen other people have some more structured feeding times. I have a separate tank for him that I keep crickets in, and to feed him crickets I'll put him right in that tank and let him go to town for a couple of minutes. I try not to let him eat his max of crickets because I want to encourage him to get his greens through the day. I'll typically snatch him up after he eats a dozen crickets or so, while he's still running around hunting. On the times I'll let him just go crazy on the crickets, he'll eat up 20 or so. He seems healthy. Very active and alert, all of his limbs have their full strength (I get plenty of scratches from his nails while playing with him). I handle him multiple times a day. He spends probably a total of two or three hours outside of his tank with me while I'm watching TV or while I'm doing homework. He enjoys relaxing on my lap, and every once in a while will liven up and feel the need to run up me onto my shoulder, then climb along the back of the couch. I've had him for a few months and everything has gone great, and I love owning him. I just want to continue to grow as a pet owner and make sure I'm not developing poor habits. Also, I've had a few problems with very minor impactions. I try to spot clean out his poor daily, so if I cant find any poop for a day or two, I immediately give him a warm bath in my bathtub. He'll swim around a bit, then stop and sit still for a little while. After sitting in the water for 10 minutes or so, he'll start getting active and run around again, then he'll poop in the water. (Note to potential lizard owners, I've found that lizard poop stinks worse than baby poop). Then I'll clean out the bathtub, and put him back in some warm water. He'll then run around and play in the water going from the deeper end to the shallower end for a little while. Then I'll take him out and put him back into his tank. It is below freezing outside, and has been cooler in my house because its the middle of the winter, so I've been having a harder time keeping his basking area up to 100 degrees. Its more often around 90 degrees through the day, but it's all I can do. I've got 250 watts of heat, as well as a UV light to try to warm him up. I'm not sure thats the problem though, because its about 50/50 that he'll poop on his own in his tank, or he needs his impaction treatment in the bathtub. Any tips that anyone can offer for these problems, as well as any things that I may have overlooked for taking care of him would be great. Thanks for anything and everything!!! :) more

Resolved Question: UV treatment - Chloroform?

We just had Culligan install a softener, UV light and Reverse Osmosis. Our only concern was the 3 positive test results from labratory for Chloroform. 4000.00 later and we still have chloroform. Culligan is closed today and all the reps are young people with no knowledge of anything more than hardness of water or TDS. We wouldn't have done this costly system and filters just to have softer water. We had to soften the water in order to uv treat it, then we had to buy uv light, then we had to buy two more filters for total dissolved solids. They told us they guarantee so I am definetly throwing a fit tommorrow but any ideas what the problem is and how culligan stands behind products? They guaranteed uv kills everything so how is this? They also chlorinated the lines first too.  more

Resolved Question: Are my Koi fish sick?

I have a large pond housing about 20+ adult Koi, and just recently, they all have not been eating as energetically, and they all seem tired. One fish in particular is normally white with black spots, but he has just developed red stripes all over, like a rash (and I have noticed his fins slightly clamped). I know this is not natural color change. Others have this unusual red developing as well, so this is effecting the whole group. The water has been layered with bubbles from the waterfalls, and these bubbles do not pop as quickly. This is not characteristic of healthy water, obviously. The filters generally do seem fine, but I am not sure. I have just performed a more than +20% water change, and just shortly thereafter, they seem a little relieved. I'm not sure if this is permanent, because in previous water changes, I have had the same observations, only to find out that they are showing the same symptoms again just the next day. So far, I've not tried water conditioners, Quick Cure or anything similar to that. Or anything ammonia or nitrate related. But just before they got sick, my UV light did burn out, and it took me a good 5 days to locate and purchase a replacement. This may have been the foundational cause of my problems, but yet again, I am not sure. Few days after the new UV light was installed, the symptoms stated above were observed. I've tried Melafix and Pimafix in a combo cure with aquarium salt to no avail. There was approximately 4-5 days of this attempted treatment until the posting of this question. *I am asking any expert or hobbyist out there that has any knowledge of Koi diseases to evaluate the situation and suggest a plausible cure for my Koi. Thank you for your time. =DI'd be happy to supply any more details about the problem or even my pond or filters. Thank you. My email is Nivlac2425@sbcglobal.net if you didn't already know. =) more

Resolved Question: Has anyone had experience in using UV light to kill E. Coil bacteria in drinking water?

Water test results show our water is contaminated with E. Coli bacteria. I'm considering installing a UV light filtration system, and wonder if anyone has had long term success in killing E.Coli bacteria. Our water source is a mountain stream running through our property it is fenced to keep stock out of the water. But becomes contaminated from pasture runoff. Our other option is chlorine treatment in the water tank. not my preferred option. more

Resolved Question: Sweage Systems?

For an Earth Science class I have to design a sewage treatment system. I was thinking that I wanted to follow this setup, loosely: http://www.yvw.com.au/waterschool/senior... My questions are, is it necessary to add chemicals to the water, as they mention? If you treated the water with a UV sterilizer, wouldn't that serve the same purpose? This might be too out-there, but would it also be efficient to have a "tank" where there are a bunch of plants--mangroves come to mind--that filter out that the organic compounds naturally? Any ideas or improvements are appreciated... more

Resolved Question: Water treatment: Disinfection vs. Filtration?

I’m trying to get the terminology straight: Water Disinfection destroys pathogens. Water-purification methods such as Filtration removes pathogens and other contaminants. As such, disinfection is a subset of purification, no? If the destroy-remove distinction is correct, what makes one better than the other? I’ve read that although filtration (and other purification methods) can remove pathogens, it’s not a substitute for disinfection. Why not? If one method destroys the pathogen and the other removes it, isn’t the end result still the same: no pathogens in the water? Or, is it so that UV, Ozone, and Chlorination is simply much more potent when it comes to "getting rid of" pathogens? A more targeted approach so to speak. more

Resolved Question: water treatment plant equipments?

I want to ask about water as one of the ingredients of toothpaste. If I use ground water from a waterwell, then what are the equipments I need to treat the water so that the water quality is suitable for the production of toothpaste? I need filtration equipment, that's obvious! What I need to know is the other equipments needed for water treatment (UV sterilizer, reverse osmotic, distillation, ion exchange, softening ???????). Resolved Question: Why is America trying to kill everyone who lives in the country?

I'm sure you've heard about BHT in processed foods, the low quality of air (polycylic aromatic hydrocarbons and aromatic armines), and the arsenic and MTBE in the drinking water. Of all these carcinogens, insurance companies don't pay for the better treatment and recommend the cheapest method to treat any case of disease. Our forefathers did not create a country that would be exploited by big companies.Yet, media shows the public that it is "ok" to eat your McD burger (probably contaminated with Mad Cow Disease since FDA does a crappy job of inspecting 1 in every 20,000 cows) and it is "ok" to go outside breathe in that fresh polluted air and get as much UV light from the sun (skin cancer). And what even ticks me off the most is that "Everything causes cancer" should not be taken seriously. Most of the stuff that causes cancer are preventable if only big companies cooperate ($$$ = #1 priority; us(citizens) = last priority). US is the most cancer ridden developed country.Well no sh*t! more

Resolved Question: How to kill bacteria with solar, more details provided?

I have in mind a water recyling system, we have severe water supply shortages. I plan to take the water from a commercialy available waste water treatment plant, pump it into a 200 litre holding tank, gravity feed for toilet flushing in the house. To do this safely and meet governemt rules, i need to be sure of killing bacteria. I'd like to conserve power also, so it looks like UV light is the go, I have learned that the water needs to be at least 55 celcious for these to occur. How many light globes are needed for no more then 50 litres per hour treatment? Is 55 degrese enough? Is Polyethylene a suitable material for UV lights. I have in mind running the water through a container exposed to this light source before the 200L storage. Thanks for you help with this, I have been weeks on it, and 5 mins here I have made some ground. more
